“Ang laki ng legs mo! Parang pata ng baboy.”

“Bro, payat-payat mo naman! Tigilan mo na ‘yang pag-a-adik!”

body shaming 01

Body shaming is the act of criticizing someone based sa kanilang shape, size, or appearance, says Cambridge Dictionary.

It is everywhere. Lahat apektado.

It causes you to feel deeply ashamed of yourself because of the society’s impossible standards of what beauty should be like.

Below are 3 things that you should know about body shaming:

  1. Ano ang epekto nito sa taong bino-body shame mo?

The person will begin to see that there’s something wrong and unlovable about him/her, says in an article by the Institute for the Psychology of Eating.

And then, you destroy the person’s self-worth.

Nagkakaroon siya ng matinding epekto sa mental and physical health such as eating disorders, sedentary lifestyles, poor nutrition choices, and cosmetic surgery. Pati na rin ‘yung kagustuhang mapag-isa, paglalaslas, pain, exercise bulimia, and even self-harm as stated in an article entitled Body Shame on You by Beauty Redefined.

  1. If you’re experiencing body shaming, paano mo mao-overcome ito?

Taryn Brumfitt, founder of The Body Image Movement, says in her TEDx Talks “It wasn’t your body that needed to change, but your perspective.”

Choose to love your body. Step by step, umalis ka from your comfort zone. Filter your social media and i-follow lang ‘yung mga nagpo-promote ng self-love at body-positivity. Surround yourself with people naie-encourage ka to be the best that you can be, according to Caitlin Cantor LCSW, CST from Psychology Today.

  1. You are only defined by your Creator

Most importantly, sabi ni God you are created in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:27). You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Start to see yourself kung paano ka tignan ni God, not by what other people would say about you.
